DRC Showcases Non-Mining Economic Strength at Ndola International Fair

DR Congo Highlights Local Production Beyond Mining at 2025 Ndola International Fair

At the 59th edition of the Ndola International Trade Fair (ZITF), the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), through its Haut-Katanga province, seized the opportunity to spotlight a lesser-known strength of its economy: local production outside the mining sector.

Held under the theme “Building Resilience through Innovation and Trade,” the prestigious SADC regional event hosted more than 1,350 B2B meetings, drawing investors, government officials, entrepreneurs, and institutions from across the region.

For the DRC, it was a chance to reframe its narrative—from being seen solely as a mining powerhouse to a diversified economy with growing capabilities in non-mining sectors.

“There’s a widespread belief that the DRC is all about minerals,” said Prosper Kiboko Tumba Bin Nsomwe, Head of the Foreign Trade Division of Haut-Katanga. “We came here to show that Congolese people can produce and process goods locally, far beyond mining.”

The Congolese pavilion drew attention for its vibrant display of local products: artisanal juices, herbal teas, essential oils, organic flours, handmade textiles, and fruit jams—many of which were produced by SMEs, including those led by women entrepreneurs.

This focus on local manufacturing aligns with a national objective to reduce import dependency and stimulate domestic industries.

“If we can produce in both quantity and quality, we’ll be better equipped to meet global challenges,” Kiboko added.

The DRC’s participation in Ndola also served to highlight economic reforms aimed at bolstering agriculture, manufacturing, and artisanal processing.

These efforts—championed by President Félix Tshisekedi and Minister of Industry Julien Paluku—are being actively implemented in Haut-Katanga by Governor Jacques Kyabula Katwe.

Government support includes subsidies for inputs, streamlined administrative processes, and financial backing for rural producers and processors.

By emphasizing its non-mining potential, the DRC is sending a clear message to regional partners: the country is serious about diversifying its economy, creating jobs, and strengthening its integration into regional value chains.

The Ndola International Fair was not just a commercial exhibition—it was a strategic platform for the DRC to reshape its image and assert its commitment to inclusive and diversified economic growth.
