DRC to Establish Independent Commission to Combat Fraud in Mining Sector

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is taking decisive steps to address escalating fraudulent practices within its mining sector.

Following a ministerial meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister for the Interior, Shabani Lukoo, on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, the establishment of an independent commission to tackle these issues was announced, according to his communications unit.

The new commission will focus on analyzing fraudulent practices and proposing solutions to effectively combat smuggling and fraud that undermine the national economy.

This initiative seeks to enhance transparency and integrity in mining activities, ensuring the DRC’s natural resources are managed responsibly and ethically.

Despite this new structure, existing bodies such as the National Commission for the Fight against Mining Fraud and the General Inspectorate of Mines will continue their operations.

The independent commission will work in collaboration with these entities, fostering a coordinated and effective approach to eradicating illegal practices in the mining sector.

This move comes in response to concerns raised by President Félix Tshisekedi during the Council of Ministers on October 18, 2024, regarding unauthorized foreigners and armed individuals infiltrating mining sites.

During the January 7 meeting, Chief Executive Judith Suminwa and other key ministers, including those of Defence, Hydrocarbons, and Mines, discussed the security challenges affecting mining areas.

The discussions highlighted the urgent need to secure these strategic locations, combat unauthorized access, and protect the DRC’s natural resources.

The establishment of the commission reflects the government’s recognition of the growing threats posed by fraud and smuggling in the mining sector.

By reinforcing oversight mechanisms and addressing security vulnerabilities, the DRC aims to safeguard its vast mineral wealth and boost the sector’s contribution to national development.

This coordinated initiative underscores the government’s commitment to fostering sustainable and lawful mining practices while addressing the critical challenges facing one of its most vital economic sectors.
