DRC voted for being the biggest contributor to the 7.8% growth in world copper production in 2021 (Fitch)
The entry into production on May 25 of the Kamoa-Kakula mine in the province of Lualaba will significantly boost the volume of copper production in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This is supported in particular by the rating agency Fitch which estimates a growth of 7.8% in world copper production which will be induced by production from the DRC.
For Fitch, copper mines currently operating around the world are expected to deliver 21.8 million tonnes this year. This represents a growth of 7.8% year on year, according to the new report “Global Copper Mining Outlook” of the analysis agency, Fitch Solutions, published on June 29, reports Agence Ecofin.
According to the document read by Agence Ecofin, these figures contrast with those of last year and demonstrate, on the one hand, the lifting of restrictions linked to the coronavirus and the commissioning of new mines, on the other hand . Regarding this last point, the DRC is expected to be the most important contributor to the increase in world production, precisely thanks to the Kamoa-Kakula mine.
In 2020, the DRC reached a production volume of more than 1.4 million tonnes of copper, a record in the country since the revival of mining over the past 20 years.
Over the decade, experts from the Fitch agency estimate that world production will continue to increase at an average annual growth rate of 3.7% thanks to the increase in demand and prices.
