ERB Approval Clears Path for 100MW Kafironda Solar Project in Mufulira

Kafironda Solar Project Gains Momentum as Mufulira Backs 100MW Renewable Energy Investment

The proposed 100-megawatt Kafironda Solar PV Project has taken a significant step toward construction after developer Kafironda Solar Energy Limited (KSE) secured a construction permit from the Energy Regulation Board (ERB).

The progress was revealed during an alignment meeting between KSE and the Mufulira Municipal Council, where both parties reviewed project timelines, regulatory requirements and key areas of cooperation needed to advance the development.

Speaking on the project, Mufulira Mayor Kasonde Musongole said discussions focused on several critical milestones, including environmental compliance, municipal infrastructure requirements, project implementation schedules and verification of site boundaries and beacons.

According to the mayor, the developer is currently finalizing an Environmental Project Brief (EPB) while also adjusting the project’s wayleave route in line with recommendations provided by the Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC).

In addition, KSE has prepared an addendum to the initial Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), which will be submitted to the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) for review and final approval.

“The proposed 100-megawatt Kafironda Solar PV Project is making steady progress following the issuance of a construction permit by the Energy Regulation Board,” Ms. Musongole said.

The mayor emphasized the importance of early engagement with local communities, particularly residents who may be affected by the project’s wayleave corridor.

She encouraged the developer to begin consultations and address matters related to compensation and stakeholder participation.

Beyond expanding electricity generation capacity, the project is expected to deliver significant economic benefits to Mufulira.

Construction and operational activities are anticipated to create employment opportunities while opening new markets for local suppliers, contractors and small businesses.

Ms. Musongole said the council remains committed to supporting investments that promote economic growth, energy security and job creation within the district.

As part of its broader engagement strategy, KSE has pledged to undertake corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives aimed at benefiting local communities.

These efforts may include support for sports development in Mufulira, with discussions also covering possible sponsorship opportunities for the council-supported football club, Mufulira Blackpool.

Both the council and the developer have agreed to maintain close collaboration throughout the implementation process to ensure regulatory compliance and timely delivery of the project.

Once completed, the Kafironda Solar PV Project is expected to make an important contribution to Zambia’s growing renewable energy sector.

The development will help strengthen electricity supply, support the country’s energy diversification goals and create long-term economic opportunities for the people of Mufulira.
