EU Commissioner Reassures Investment in DRC’s Critical Minerals
During a meeting in Lubumbashi, Didier Reynders, the European Union Commissioner for Justice, conveyed strong support from European economic operators for investing in the development of critical minerals in the southeastern region of the DRC, as well as emphasizing the importance of addressing the social aspects of mining.
Reynders explained, “The goal is to establish strategic partnerships in the mining sector for critical minerals, enabling European operators to actively engage in enhancing the social aspects of mining exploitation. We are committed to increasing the value of work in the mining sector.”
Furthermore, the European Union is interested in collaborating with its partners to invest in the agri-food industry in Haut-Katanga.
Reynders elaborated, “We aim to work with European operators to develop the energy sector, given the significant energy demand in the province, as well as in the agricultural sector and the processing of agricultural products.
There is substantial production capacity in this region, and we recognize that many laborers currently work in the mines with limited opportunities for development in other sectors. These projects hold great importance.”
The European Commissioner unequivocally demonstrated the European continent’s eagerness to establish itself as a key partner in the exploitation of Katanga region’s mining resources.
