Fortescue Future Industries to produce Green Hydrogen in DRC

Renowned as a champion of green hydrogen on an international scale, the Australian firm Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) is ready to embark on the production of carbon-free green hydrogen from 100% renewable sources in the Democratic Republic of Congo. (DRC).

This was stated by Andrew Forest, Chairman of FFI, to the Congolese Prime Minister, Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, during a hearing on Friday March 17, 2022.

According to FFI leaders, this is a practical and achievable solution to decarbonize heavy industry and create jobs in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Through its turbine rehabilitation project on Inga 2, the Australian firm (FFI) aspires to extend its impact in the Democratic Republic of Congo by transforming Congolese raw materials, in particular cobalt, nickel and many other raw materials to achieve to the creation of jobs and added value in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

“We had an excellent meeting with his Excellency the Prime Minister. Of course, we talked about the very large Inga project and we quickly understood together that we must move forward, but also we proposed to his Excellency the Prime Minister a faster project for the rehabilitation of a turbine on Inga 2 to be able to transform Congolese raw materials here (cobalt, nickel and others) to produce new generation batteries.

We are indeed major specialists in green hydrogen, which is a type of energy storage. This is also how we specialize in batteries for electric vehicles, batteries which are another energy storage mechanism.

But the most important thing for us is to do it in the DRC, to be able to create jobs here and create added value here in the Democratic Republic of Congo. “, told the press Andrew Forrest.

And to add: “The Prime Minister received us, we are very happy with the meeting we had. He encouraged us very seriously, he gave the directives with which we will move forward.

He is a man of action, he is a great leader, we are happy. “, concluded the number one of FFI interpreted by the Congolese economist Al Kitenge.

Convinced of the relevance of the project, the Prime Minister, Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, gave the necessary directives for a better outcome of the Fortescue Future Industries project.

As a reminder, Fortescue Future Industries is a global green energy company operating in over 25 countries and is among the top ten ASX Fortescue companies.

FFI is leading the green industrial revolution, developing technology solutions for hard-to-decarbonize industries, while building a global portfolio of renewable energy, green hydrogen and green ammonia projects.

Additionally, FFI is leading the global effort to decarbonize hard-to-reduce sectors and is responsible for the plan to decarbonize one of the world’s largest resource companies by 2030.
