FSC TFM OFFICIALLY HANDOVER MANAGEMENT OF STAFFING TO DOT-TFM
Tuesday, December 12, 2023 will remain marked in the annals of Tenke Fungurume Mining (TFM) by the handover and resumption between the TFM Community Social Fund (FSC TFM ASBL), led by Hugo Sinza, and the TFM Donation (DOT-TFM), a specialized body of the Congolese state which will henceforth be led by Jean-Bedel Akalo.
This official handing over and resumption of the management scepter of the allocation of 0.3 percent of TFM’s turnover comes 13 years after the creation of FSC TFM, which aimed to support the sustainable development of local communities. The ceremony took place in the TFM facilities in the presence of several admiring political authorities.
Mr. Sinza and Mr. Akalo, in their respective capacities as executive director of FSC TFM and president of the new DOT-TFM organization, proceeded to the official signing of the minutes.
At the same time, Mr. Sinza also symbolically handed over to Mr. Akalo the administrative documents of the TFM Community Social Fund under the gaze of various stakeholders present in the room.
It was an atmosphere of both joy and nostalgia for the FSC TFM team as they bid farewell to what was once the reason for their pride.
Present at this ceremony were Mr. CPO of TFM, Wu Shenggen, representing the General Director of TFM; the mayor of Fungurume commune, Mr. Kaleng Ntamb; Ms. Lydie Masengo, deputy provincial director of the National Fund for Promotion and Social Service (FNPSS); Mr. Jean-Luc Rumej, head of office of the mines division, representing the head of the mines division of Lualaba province; the traditional authorities of the place as well as the dean of the first board of directors of the FSC TFM, Mr. Katwe Teba, and some members of civil society.
In his emotional remarks, the Executive Director of FSC TFM, Mr. Hugo Sinza, thanked his team in person for the work tirelessly accomplished in the interest of local communities.
Mr. Sinza then reflected on the journey and challenges that the FSC TFM has faced in recent years, before shedding light on the countless achievements that are the pride of the FSC TFM today.
“The Social Fund has invested massively in major infrastructure, such as electrification and roads. An electrical substation, as well as a public lighting program in the urban-rural commune of Fungurume, the paving of roads in Tenke, are today the pride of the Social Fund,” acclaimed Mr. Sinza.
“The entire Social Fund team is proud to bequeath to the DOT-TFM these works which will enable local communities to achieve the objectives of sustainable development,” he added.
For his part, Mr. Wu Shenggen, the CPO, expressed feelings of pride for the milestone reached by the FSC TFM: “We are proud that our practices in terms of social responsibility have been taken as a model and reference by the national government , to the point of making it a legal recommendation throughout the entire republic. Since its creation in 2010, until December 2022, the Social Fund has benefited from a total allocation from TFM amounting to USD 54,768,000.165. »
The FSC TFM boasts of several achievements, among others, the construction of around twenty schools, social promotion centers, health centers, drinking water supply networks distributed throughout the concession, as well as the implementation in place of a school scholarship for local youth.
However, Mr. Sinza recalled that much remains to be done and called on the DOT-TFM to follow the development vision, pick up from where the FSC TFM left off and excel, in the interest of all communities. “We can only wish the DOT-TFM to usefully continue this work of development, to do better and quickly, to innovate, to redouble their efforts, because everything is possible,” concluded Mr. Sinza.
The DOT-TFM, heir to the works of the FSC TFM, unequivocally praised the work carried out by TFM through the Social Fund. “Our recognition goes to the TFM company, which was able to take steps to wonderfully fulfill its duty of social responsibility, and did not hesitate to align itself in the allocation process of 0.3% of the turnover of which it is the initiator and inspiration on the national level.
TFM did not hesitate to place in the hands of the DOT-TFM the projects that it initiated through its foundation for the benefit of the communities,” confided Mr. Akalo, president of the DOT-TFM.
Mr. Akalo also stressed that the modus operandi of the organization will be different although pursuing the same objectives, those of developing local communities.
“We remind you that our objectives remain the same, but that the approach differs. Several changes will take place in the process of carrying out projects and actions of a social nature, for the benefit of communities both in the choice of projects and in the selection of service providers,” Mr. Akalo was careful to underline.
Mr. Akalo thanked the FSC TFM team for sharing their expertise. For the part of the DOT-TFM, promised Mr. Akalo, it will continue the path of development of the impacted communities.
Initiated by TFM, today, the 0.3 percent allocation is applied in all mining companies operating in the DRC, as clarified by the revised mining code.
Now managed by the Congolese state, DOT-TFM should pursue the same goal, that of promoting the sustainable development of local communities impacted by TFM’s mining activities.
