GECAMINES Advances Mining Transparency with Secure Certificate Initiative

GECAMINES, a cornerstone of the mining sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has entered a new phase in securing its operations by obtaining the first secure certificates for its mining titles.

The formal presentation of these certificates took place on Friday, October 18, 2024, in Kinshasa, conducted by the Mining Registry (CAMI).

During the event, Guy Robert Lukama, Chairman of the Board of Directors of GECAMINES, received the certificates from Popol Mabolia Yenga, the Director General of CAMI.

This initiative is part of the implementation of tamper-proof certificates for mining and quarry titles, which was announced on September 20, 2024, and came into effect on October 1 of this year.

This move is part of a broader reform agenda aimed at enhancing transparency and traceability in a mining sector historically plagued by opacity and fraud.

In alignment with President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi’s vision, the initiative reflects a strong political commitment to reclaiming full control of the DRC’s natural resources.

The Minister of Mines, Kizito Pakabomba, is also actively involved in combating fraud, a persistent issue that undermines state revenues and deters foreign investment.

The introduction of secure certificates transcends mere administrative formalities. It aims to ensure the legitimacy of transactions and safeguard the rights of legitimate stakeholders in this strategic sector. The mining industry, rich in resources such as copper, cobalt, and lithium, plays a crucial role in the global energy transition.

The enhanced traceability afforded by these certificates is expected to bolster investor confidence and maximize government revenues while discouraging fraud and corruption.

Ultimately, this reform represents a significant turning point for GECAMINES and the broader Congolese mining sector. It serves as a vital instrument for promoting more rigorous and transparent management, aligning with international standards and the country’s development goals.
