Hon. Anthony Mavunde Spearheads Transformation in Tanzania’s Mining Sector

In a remarkable display of leadership and foresight, Hon. Anthony Mavunde, Minister of Minerals, led a crucial meeting with the Board of Directors and Management of the State Mining Corporation (STAMICO) in Dodoma on April 18, 2024. The agenda focused on shaping the mining landscape in Tanzania for the fiscal year 2023/2024.

Key Highlights:

.Research and Development: Minister Mavunde stressed the significance of comprehensive mineral research to establish large-scale mining projects. This strategic approach aims to reduce reliance on foreign investors by harnessing and enhancing local capabilities.

.Sectoral Investments: With a forward-thinking strategy, the Minister underscored the importance of substantial investments in strategic and rare minerals like graphite, coal, helium, and metal ores. These minerals are essential for technological advancements and positioning Tanzania as a mining leader in Africa.

.Supporting Small-Scale Miners: The Minister outlined plans under the Mining Vision 2030, themed “Minerals are Life and Wealth,” focusing on empowering small-scale miners. This initiative includes identifying mineral-rich areas, facilitating necessary licenses, and implementing the Sustainable Productive Mining Program (MBT), particularly targeting women and youth in mining with adequate tools and resources.

.Collaborative Efforts: Deputy Minister of Minerals, Dr. Steven Kiruswa, called for strengthened collaboration with the Geological Survey of Tanzania (GST) to discover new investment areas and promote the nation’s mineral resources further.

.Financial Growth and Independence: Dr. Venance Mwasse, CEO of STAMICO, reported significant financial growth, with revenue soaring from 1.3 billion shillings to 63 billion shillings. The objective is to achieve complete financial independence by July 2024.

This meeting not only highlights ongoing strategic initiatives but also solidifies STAMICO’s pivotal role in propelling national economic growth through the mining sector.

Hon. Mavunde’s leadership and the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders continue to pave the way for a prosperous and sustainable mining industry in Tanzania.
