Investigation Into Alleged $10 Million Embezzlement at Gécamines Commences
The definitive inquiry into the alleged misappropriation of $10 million from SMICO to over twenty individuals, including senior executives and consultants of Gécamines, began on Friday, November 10, in Kinshasa.
The CEO of Gécamines, Guy-Robert Lukama, finally cooperated with IGF inspectors after days of resistance. The investigation focuses on the disappearance of millions intended for Gécamines’ individuals.
The IGF raised concerns about the sharing of $10 million from SMICO, a Gécamines subsidiary, among 27 people within the state mining company, violating governance rules.
The IGF brigade chief, Muzeze Nzonzimbu, classified these transfers as “illicit advantages and embezzlement,” seeking authorization from Jules Alingete Key to summon the suspects for questioning.
Recall that the UDPS Youth League in Lubumbashi demanded Guy-Robert Lukama’s resignation, accusing him and Mr. Léon Mwine, a board member, of embezzlement and self-granted social benefits detrimental to Gécamines’ staff.
They urged President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo to uphold justice, echoing the sentiments of various NGOs seeking a thorough investigation into the matter, including “Le Congo n’est pas pour la sale,” ODEP, La Coalition Tous pour la DRC, and JUSTICIA ASBL.
