Landslide in a gold quarry kills one and two injured in Ngalula (Fizi), South Kivu, DRC

An artisanal miner was killed on Friday May 14 in a gold mining quarry in Ngalula village, in Ngandja sector (Fizi territory).

According to local civil society, two other diggers were injured.

“There was an accident in a gold quarry in a place called Bikuma. As soon as we were informed, we went to the place. Three people were stranded under the ground. We mobilized other diggers and we managed to save two who were injured and they were taken to the general referral hospital in Lulimba. Unfortunately, the other was already dead, “New Civil Society coordinator Justin Wakati told ACTUALITE.CD. in Ngalula.

Several cases of accidents due to landslides in gold mining quarries are often recorded in the territory of Fizi, especially during this rainy period.

“We ask the State to regulate the work of artisanal gold digging which is the basis of several accidents, especially in this area of Ngandja”, pleaded Justin Wakati.
