Maamba Energy to Expand Power Generation to 700MW by 2026
Maamba Energy Announces $700MW Expansion Plan to Power Zambia’s Economic Transformation by 2026
Maamba Energy Limited (MEL), one of Zambia’s leading energy producers, has announced an ambitious plan to expand its power generation capacity to 700 megawatts (MW) by 2026.
The announcement, made during the Southern Province Investment Forum and Exposition 2025, underscores the company’s commitment to supporting Zambia’s investment-led socio-economic transformation.
Speaking at the event, Maamba Energy Chief Executive Officer, Colonel Cyrus Minwalla (Retired), reaffirmed the company’s mission to drive national development through sustainable energy.
“Every megawatt we generate fuels industries, lights homes, and creates jobs that transform lives. This is what socio-economic transformation looks like in action,” said Colonel Minwalla.
The announcement came in alignment with President Hakainde Hichilema’s call for enhanced investor confidence and economic ambition. The President emphasized that meaningful investments translate directly into improved livelihoods:
“Out of investments and projects, once implemented, jobs are created. That’s the way to fight poverty,” he noted.
Powering Zambia’s Growth
For over a decade, Maamba Energy Limited has been a cornerstone of Zambia’s energy sector, operating a 300 MW thermal power plant while revitalizing the country’s largest coal mine.
The company’s Phase II expansion project, currently underway, comprises an additional 300 MW thermal unit and a 100 MW solar power plant, bringing the total installed capacity to 700 MW by 2026.
This development will significantly enhance national energy security by providing stable, climate-independent baseload power essential for sustained industrial growth.
Driving Socio-Economic Transformation
In line with the Expo’s theme — “Socio-Economic Transformation through Partnerships and Innovation” — Maamba Energy continues to extend its impact beyond power generation through community-focused initiatives that promote education, healthcare, innovation, and livelihoods.
Education:
The Maamba Private School remains one of Zambia’s top-performing educational institutions, proudly maintaining a 100% pass rate in national examinations.
Health:
The Maamba Eye Clinic, equipped with a modern surgical theatre, has successfully performed over 400 cataract surgeries in 2025, benefiting patients from five districts and neighboring Zimbabwe.
Innovation and Livelihoods:
In line with the President’s vision to leverage local strengths, Maamba Energy has launched a brick-making cooperative that converts waste by-products from its power plant into eco-friendly construction materials. This initiative not only creates sustainable employment but also advances environmental stewardship.
“These are not just projects; they are living examples of how partnerships and innovation directly fuel socio-economic transformation — the very essence of this year’s Expo,” Colonel Minwalla emphasized.
“We share the President’s confidence that with the right partnerships, Southern Province and Zambia can unlock unprecedented opportunities for inclusive growth.”
Commitment to National Development
Maamba Energy expressed deep appreciation to the Government of the Republic of Zambia and the Southern Provincial Administration for ongoing reforms aimed at improving the business environment, strengthening investor confidence, and positioning Zambia as a competitive regional energy hub.
With its 700MW expansion on track, Maamba Energy continues to embody Zambia’s vision of a sustainable, inclusive, and energy-secure future.
