Miguel Kashal Katemb Examines DRC’s Economic Development Through Local Content
Congolese businessman and public policy specialist Miguel Kashal Katemb has published a new book examining how local content can drive economic development and strengthen economic sovereignty in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Titled The Development of Africa Through Local Content: The Case of the DRC, the book is presented as the first Congolese publication dedicated specifically to local content.
It explores how greater participation by local businesses, entrepreneurs and professionals can help countries capture more value from their natural resources and economies.
Drawing on Kashal’s experience in economic policy and his former leadership of the Authority for Regulation of Subcontracting in the Private Sector (ARSP), the book examines local content as more than an economic policy.
It presents it as a tool for creating jobs, supporting industrialisation, developing national businesses and building a stronger middle class.
The book also considers international experiences and reforms undertaken in the DRC, with a particular focus on how local content can transform natural-resource wealth into sustainable economic growth.
The publication features a preface by former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and a postface by former Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Contributions from business leaders Dr Edem Adzogenu and Pascal Kinduelo Lumbu are also included.
Kashal argues that the value of Africa’s natural resources should be measured not only by what the continent possesses, but by its ability to transform those resources into local businesses, employment, skills and lasting economic value.
Published by Éditions L’Harmattan, the 224-page book was released on August 28, 2026, and is aimed at policymakers, investors, entrepreneurs, academics and other stakeholders interested in Africa’s economic development and local content policies.
