PURPOSE
Provide Technical Support to the Drilling Operations Team(s) and oversight to all drilling activities, supervise and implement the drilling programme, and to ensure that all drilling operations are conducted in a safe and efficient manner, within the requirements of Company policy and Country legislations and in line with (MR208).
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- To co-ordinate and provide the necessary leadership to carry out all activities with respect to the various drilling programmes. To co-ordinate the collection of all data to be transmitted back to the base office, and to ensure the correctness, content and quality of such data. To be the custodian and responsible person for the drilling reporting
- To continually monitor the effectiveness of the on-going process and to report on same. To be able to suggest and discuss any changes which may be required to the programme with a view to improvement
- To supervise the maintenance work of drilling related equipment, in accordance with procedures, to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- To take prompt action, in the event of an emergency within the drilling package, to safeguard life and minimize damage to properties and any detrimental effect on the environment.
- Escalate issues requiring knowledge about the broader business impact of decisions. Works with mentor as needed
- Be the go-to expert on all aspects of drilling, re-drilling and predrilling, Bogging, Hauling Systems and Methodologies
- Responsible for assessment of all activities and processes related to drilling operations
- Answers queries and assists Shift Bosses in handling requests related to drilling operations which includes problem solving and judgment
- Discusses short-range drilling plans with the Shift Bosses and other stakeholders to ensure they are realistic and achievable
- Monitors equipment availability and assess production priorities based on availability of equipment
- Provides assessment of safety and performance outcomes in coordination with the Shift Bosses and Mine Managers
- May mentor or train less experienced employees on operating standards, procedures and methods
- Ensures compliance with company policies and procedures and regulations in Mine Operations
- Provides training, workplace inspection and safety awareness to contractors and other Operations staff as needed
- Maintain a positive and close working relationship with other groups in the mine to ensure smooth mining processes
- Ensure that safety and welfare of employees is top priority at all times in the work site
- Participate in recommending or executing personnel actions, such as hiring (interviewing), evaluations, promotions and discipline.
- Any duties as assigned by the superintendent
QUALIFICATIONS
- Grade Twelve (12) Certificate or equivalent
- Degree in Mining Engineering or any Related Mining Field
- Supervisory Certificate will be a must
- Blasting License holder
- First Aid certificate holder
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 8 years’ experience in an open pit mining environment.
- Familiarity with the use of tools, fixtures and equipment for blasting aids
