Mopani Copper Mine Accelerates Production with Ambitious Year-End Target
Mopani Copper Mine to Produce Over 70,000 Metric Tonnes of Copper in 2025 as Zambia’s Mining Sector Gains Momentum
Mopani Copper Mine has announced an ambitious production target of more than 70,000 metric tonnes of copper by the end of 2025, signaling a robust recovery and expansion in Zambia’s copper industry.
This goal comes as global demand for copper surges, driven by the energy transition, electrification, and growing demand for renewable energy technologies.
Chief Executive Officer Charles Sakanya confirmed that production at Mopani is steadily increasing, supported by strategic measures to improve operational efficiency and output. “We are implementing a combination of infrastructure upgrades, process optimizations, and workforce development to ensure that we meet this target,” Sakanya said in an interview.
A Strategic Ownership Structure for Sustainable Growth
Mopani’s renewed momentum follows its restructuring under a new shareholding model, where Zambia, through ZCCM Investments Holdings (ZCCM-IH), now holds a 49% stake, while the majority 51% is owned by a private investor.
Sakanya described this as a groundbreaking partnership that positions Mopani for long-term growth while ensuring Zambia benefits directly from its copper resources.
“This partnership blends private sector expertise with public ownership, ensuring both efficiency and local benefit,” Sakanya said. “It is an important milestone for the mine and for Zambia’s broader mining industry.”
Impact on Zambia’s Economy
Mopani’s increased production is expected to contribute significantly to Zambia’s economy, boosting foreign exchange earnings and government revenue while creating employment opportunities.
With copper being one of Zambia’s top exports and a key driver of economic growth, Mopani’s success could have ripple effects across local communities, infrastructure, and social development programs.
In addition to production increases, Mopani is investing in workforce development and local engagement programs, aiming to strengthen skills training and create sustainable job opportunities for Zambians.
Looking Ahead
The copper mining industry in Zambia faces both opportunities and challenges as global demand grows. For Mopani, meeting the year-end target of over 70,000 metric tonnes will require sustained operational efficiency, investment, and cooperation between stakeholders.
If achieved, Mopani’s ambitious plan will not only cement its position as a key player in Zambia’s copper sector but also reinforce the country’s status as a critical supplier of copper to the global economy.
