President Hichilema Launches 300MW Maamba Power Plant Expansion

Maamba Energy Ltd and Zambia’s energy sector celebrated a significant milestone as President Hakainde Hichilema officially commissioned the Phase Two expansion of a 300MW thermal power plant at a groundbreaking ceremony in Maamba.

This project is crucial for meeting Zambia’s energy demands and enhancing regional energy trade.

Maamba Energy Ltd, a joint venture between ZCCM-IH (35%) and Nava Bharat (65%), is dedicated to providing reliable and sustainable energy solutions for the country.

President Hichilema urged all stakeholders to ensure the timely completion of the project, underscoring its importance for Zambia’s future.

ZCCM-IH Board Chairperson, Mr. Kakenenwa Muyangwa, commended Maamba Energy Ltd for its environmental stewardship. He highlighted the company’s innovative use of low-grade coal, previously considered waste and a source of pollution, to generate thermal power.

Utilizing CFBC technology, Maamba captures over 95% of fly ash, repurposing it as waste fill in mined areas. This effort, coupled with large-scale tree planting, has significantly rehabilitated the land.

Mr. Muyangwa also praised Maamba Energy Ltd for its robust Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program and sustainable mining practices, positioning the company as a global model for responsible operations.

He reaffirmed ZCCM-IH’s commitment to investing in the energy sector, noting a USD35 million equity contribution to the Phase Two project and potential further support through a USD15 million loan.

The USD400 million Phase II expansion is expected to be completed by July 2026, furthering Maamba Energy Ltd’s role in advancing Zambia’s energy infrastructure in an environmentally responsible manner.
