President Hichilema Reopens Lubambe Mine Under Chinese Ownership

CHILILABOMBWE, ZAMBIA – President Hakainde Hichilema has officially re-launched operations at Lubambe Copper Mine Limited in Chililabombwe, under the new ownership of Chinese firm JCHX Mining Limited, marking a new chapter in Zambia’s mining revival and strategic partnership with China.

Speaking during a ceremony held at the mine, President Hichilema highlighted the tangible benefits emerging from Zambia’s strengthened cooperation with China, citing ongoing developments such as the 28 Shaft project in Luanshya, the revitalization of Mulungushi Textiles in Kabwe, and the significant investment in sinking two new shafts at Lubambe.

“This partnership is now delivering real results for our people,” the President said, adding that these developments point to Zambia’s renewed economic momentum driven by responsible foreign investment.

He commended Lubambe Mine management for adopting innovative technologies aimed at lowering the cost of transporting ore from underground, and stressed the need for modern mining operations to prioritize both environmental sustainability and worker welfare.

“Mining firms must take deliberate steps to protect the environment and ensure the safety of their workers. Investment in advanced technology is key to achieving efficiency and high safety standards,” President Hichilema urged.

The President also reassured Lubambe’s management and workers that both government and local communities will offer their full support to ensure the success of the mine’s operations.

Echoing the President’s commitment to responsible mining, Lubambe Deputy CEO Daniel Chihili emphasized the company’s environmental safeguards.

“We have put in place systems to ensure there is no risk of acid contamination. Our operations do not involve the use of acid in our tailing dams,” Chihili said, highlighting the mine’s environmentally conscious approach.

President Hichilema was warmly received in Chililabombwe, drawing large, enthusiastic crowds in a show of strong community support for the revitalized mining project.

The reopening of Lubambe Copper Mine under new leadership signals a renewed effort to boost copper production, create jobs, and foster sustainable economic growth in Zambia’s Copperbelt.
