President Tshisekedi Fires Intelligence Chief Following Failed Coup Attempt

President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo has swiftly responded to a recent failed coup attempt by removing Daniel Lusadisu from his position as the head of the National Intelligence Agency (ANR).

This decisive action is part of Tshisekedi’s broader efforts to strengthen national security after the attempted overthrow threatened the country’s stability.

Lusadisu’s dismissal was confirmed by the government on Friday, following a direct order from President Tshisekedi. The President, known for his commitment to reform and fortify national security measures, is reportedly planning additional changes within various security institutions.

Lusadisu, a medical professional with a background in cardiology and emergency medicine, had previously served in the Zairian Armed Forces and the Special Presidential Division (DSP). Despite his diverse background, his tenure as head of the ANR came under scrutiny due to the recent coup attempt.

In a strategic move to restore confidence in the intelligence agency, President Tshisekedi has reappointed Justin Inzun Kakiak to lead the ANR.

Kakiak, who previously held the same position from March 2019 to December 2021, brings substantial experience to the role. He will be supported by Justin Mulumba Nsabua, a seasoned lawyer from the Kongo Central bar.

The failed coup, orchestrated by Christian Malanga, a former Congolese army officer, included an attack on Vital Kamerhe, the Speaker of the National Assembly, and the occupation of part of the Palais de la Nation, the President’s office. However, Malanga was swiftly neutralized by the armed forces before the situation could escalate further.

President Tshisekedi’s prompt actions highlight his commitment to maintaining stability and reinforcing the effectiveness of the country’s security and intelligence services.
