Rio Tinto Plane Crash Claims Six Lives, Leaves One Survivor

Six individuals lost their lives in a devastating plane crash near Fort Smith in Canada’s remote Northwest Territories on on Wednesday, January 24th, according to the NWT Coroner Service.

The incident involved a small aircraft transporting workers from global miner Rio Tinto to the Diavik Diamond Mine. Four passengers and two crew members from North Western Air Lease perished, with one survivor being treated and transported to Yellowknife.

The Royal Canadian Air Force participated in search and rescue operations, locating the British Aerospace Jetstream near the Slave River.

An investigative team from Canada’s Transportation Safety Board is now examining the crash, while Rio Tinto CEO Jakob Stausholm expressed the company’s deep sorrow and commitment to collaborating with authorities in determining the cause.
