Sama Lukonde calls on govt to crack down perpetrators of Illicit mining situation in South Kivu – DRC

Prime Minister Sama Lukonde dwelled on the case of illegal mining in the province of South Kivu. In his communication during the eighteenth meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Friday, September 3, Sama Lukonde called on the government to exercise rigorous repression against those responsible for the illicit exploitation of mines in this province.

“Following the distribution of a magazine which revealed cases of illicit mining in the eastern provinces, the Prime Minister called on the Government to crack down on the perpetrators of this situation which is also facilitated by the presence of armed groups which prevent the control of the State “, indicates the report of the Council of Ministers.

To this end, Sama Lukonde invited the Ministers in charge of the Interior, Justice and Mines to take the necessary measures to closely monitor this situation.

Note that an investigation carried out by Alain Foka, journalist at Radio France Internationale (RFI), reveals illegal exploitation at the Kamituga mine. This mine located in the province of South Kivu is operated by unauthorized Chinese companies.

After descent of the provincial authority at this mine, the Chinese who illegally exploited the minerals there, closed their doors to vanish into nature.

In addition, Beijing “condemns any illegal exploitation of natural resources” in the Democratic Republic of Congo, said Thursday on Twitter the Chinese ambassador in Kinshasa, amid accusations of opaque activities of Chinese companies in the DRC.

“I reiterated today, in a telephone interview” with the Minister of Mines Antoinette N’Samba Kalambayi “the condemnation of the Chinese government against any illegal exploitation of natural resources in the DRC”, wrote the Ambassador, Zhu Jing.

In his text, the diplomat adds to having assured the minister of “the Chinese government’s availability to collaborate with the Congolese authorities to sanction those responsible”.
