Search Continues for Trapped Miners in Zambia’s Mumbwa Gold Mine Accident
Search operations continue for trapped miners following a tragic accident at the Lwiili Gold Mine in Mumbwa District, Central Province.
Yesterday, ten miners were confirmed dead after their bodies were recovered from the collapsed mine, while six miners were rescued alive and subsequently admitted to Nangoma Mission Hospital.
Mumbwa District Commissioner Namukolo Hayumbu informed ZNBC news that the search for additional victims has entered its second day. She noted that the ongoing search is due to the uncertain number of miners still trapped after a portion of the mine collapsed.
Of the six miners who were rescued, four have been discharged from the hospital, while the remaining two are reported to be in stable condition.
Meanwhile, Central Province Police Commanding Officer Charity Chanda also reported to ZNBC news that officers remain on-site, assisting with the search efforts.
The incident occurred when part of the earth collapsed, trapping an unknown number of individuals engaged in mining activities at the Lwiili Open Pit Gold Mine.
