Senegal President Faye Appoints Ally Sonko as Prime Minister
Senegal’s political landscape witnessed a significant shift as newly inaugurated President Bassirou Diomaye Faye wasted no time in making his mark.
In his inaugural act, President Faye appointed firebrand politician and key supporter Ousmane Sonko as prime minister.
Sonko, known for his outspokenness and popularity among the youth, has been a vocal critic of former President Macky Sall. Despite being barred from the recent presidential election due to a defamation conviction, Sonko maintains his innocence. Throughout the campaign, he rallied support under the banner “Diomaye is Sonko,” urging voters to rally behind Faye, who clinched victory with an impressive 54% of the vote in the first round.
Following his inauguration, President Faye wasted no time in appointing Sonko as prime minister. In his first public statement after assuming office, Sonko pledged to present President Faye with a comprehensive list of proposed ministerial appointments for approval.
Sonko emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration in achieving the government’s objectives. “There will be no question of leaving him (Faye) alone to assume this heavy responsibility,” Sonko affirmed. “We will spare no effort to achieve the goals we have promised the people.”
The appointment of Sonko as prime minister marks a significant moment in Senegal’s political landscape, signaling President Faye’s commitment to inclusivity and cooperation.
As the new government sets its sights on delivering its promises to the people, all eyes will be on the dynamic duo of Faye and Sonko as they lead Senegal into a new era of governance.
