The DRC holds 3.6 million tonnes of cobalt, almost half of the world’s reserves
The DRC alone holds 3.6 million tonnes of cobalt, almost half of the world’s cobalt reserves. This potential of such a strategic mineral is a comparative advantage of Kinshasa compared to other nations in the world.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo alone produces 63% of the cobalt in the world, thus becoming the world’s leading producer and exporter of the green metal.
The global industry therefore mainly needs Congolese cobalt to operate at full capacity. With the prospect of increased production of electric vehicles by major manufacturers, cobalt, according to experts, will continue to remain the flagship mineral of the world’s advanced industry for at least the next two decades.
Note that cobalt is now part of the “Eight strategic raw materials” of world industry thanks to its many industrial applications.
