UN Human Rights Chief Discusses Humanitarian Concerns with DRC President
President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) held a significant meeting with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, on Thursday at the African Union City.
This meeting followed Turk’s recent four-day mission to the DRC, where he assessed the humanitarian situation in the eastern part of the country.
Accompanied by Ms. Bintou Keita, Head of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO), Turk expressed his deep concern to President Tshisekedi regarding the humanitarian challenges faced by the population in the eastern regions.
After the meeting, Turk stated, “I had a very fruitful and important conversation with the President of the Republic about collaborating on human rights issues.”
He emphasized the urgent need for international mobilization to address the suffering of people affected by violence and conflict, particularly in Goma and Ituri.
During his visit, Turk engaged with various stakeholders, including government officials, representatives of civil society, and the National Human Rights Commission in Kinshasa.
Additionally, he met with Bintou Keita, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, and other senior officials from MONUSCO.
Turk’s discussions underscore the pressing need for concerted efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the DRC and provide support to its people.
This meeting between President Tshisekedi and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights reflects a commitment to addressing human rights challenges and fostering collaboration between the DRC government and international partners.
