Volcan Mines Halt Operations in Peru for Regulatory Updates

Peruvian zinc, lead, and silver miner Volcan, supported by global commodities giant Glencore, announced plans to cease operations at three of its mines in the country starting Tuesday. This decision comes as the company focuses on updating the operating permit for its Rumichaca tailings dam.

According to a statement released to the local regulator, Volcan will suspend activities at the San Cristobal, Carahuacra, and Ticlio mines in central Peru for a period of up to 30 days.

Peru, being the world’s second-largest producer of copper, silver, and zinc, relies significantly on these metals for its economy, with metal sales constituting 60% of the country’s exports.

The affected mines are part of the Yauli mining unit in the Junin department, situated 170 km from the capital Lima. These mines contribute to zinc, lead, silver, and copper production in the region, with the Rumichaca tailings dam located nearby.

While the company did not specify the exact impact of the shutdown on production, it assured that necessary maintenance work would be conducted during this period to ensure a swift restart of operations.
