Women Break Ground in Heavy Machinery Operation at Kagem Mining

In a revolutionary shift towards gender diversity and inclusion, Kagem Mining is rewriting the narrative of women in the mining industry.

What was once considered an unconventional sight—women skillfully maneuvering heavy-duty machinery—is now becoming a norm at the emerald mine, challenging traditional gender stereotypes and fostering an environment of empowerment.

The journey towards inclusivity began in 2022 when Kagem welcomed four female heavy equipment operators into its workforce. Since then, the mine has made remarkable strides, recently incorporating an additional 11 female operators, totaling 14 women in this role alone.

Adriaan Prinsloo, General Manager of Kagem, expressed the company’s commitment to promoting gender equality and providing equal opportunities for all.

For women like Joyce and Tina, operating heavy machinery at Kagem is a dream come true after facing numerous challenges and barriers elsewhere.

Joyce, at 35, recently embarked on her journey as an articulated dump truck (ADT) operator, breaking through societal norms that often hindered her aspirations.

Similarly, Tina, aged 28, found her passion for heavy machinery at a young age but struggled to find opportunities until Kagem provided her with a platform to showcase her skills.

Esther, a 32-year-old excavator operator, highlights the importance of resources and support for women pursuing non-traditional careers.

Despite facing skepticism and doubts, Esther’s determination led her to overcome obstacles and achieve her goals. She believes that with adequate resources and encouragement, more women can pursue fulfilling careers in the mining industry.

Comprehensive training lies at the heart of Kagem’s commitment to empowering its staff. Constance, aged 34, emphasizes the significance of training in enhancing skills and confidence behind the wheel.

Kagem’s focus on providing thorough training ensures that all staff, regardless of gender, are equipped to excel in their roles.

Adriaan Prinsloo, Kagem’s GM, reaffirms the company’s dedication to supporting the growth of the mining industry in Zambia and empowering more women to join its workforce.

With a vision of creating inclusive opportunities and inspiring future leaders, Kagem is driving innovation, diversity, and progress in the mining sector.

As women continue to pave the way in heavy machinery operation at Kagem Mining, they serve as role models for aspiring industry professionals, showcasing the power of determination, resilience, and perseverance in breaking down barriers and achieving success.
