Zambia and China Celebrate Revival of Luanshya Copper Mines
Zambia and the People’s Republic of China commemorated the commencement of the dewatering process at the long-dormant Luanshya Copper Mines, affectionately known as Shaft 28, in a groundbreaking ceremony filled with jubilation and hope.
This event, hailed as a significant milestone, signifies a new chapter in the enduring relationship between the two nations.
President Hakainde Hichilema, speaking at the ceremony, expressed profound gratitude to His Excellency President Xi Jinping, the people of China, and the China Non-Ferrous Metals Corporation (CNMC) for their pivotal investment in revitalizing the once-thriving mine.
He emphasized that the venture promises to inject vitality into the local economy by creating 3,000 direct jobs and fostering numerous business opportunities for the residents of Luanshya and the Copperbelt region.
CNMC’s commitment of $500 million for the overhaul of Shaft 28 is poised to breathe new life into the mining industry. The project incorporates cutting-edge technology, including a state-of-the-art pumping system capable of relocating 170 million cubic liters of water to the Kafue River.
This innovative system not only facilitates water evacuation but also supports various agricultural activities, offering a boon to local farmers.
The emotional significance of this moment was not lost on President Hichilema, who reflected on the arduous journey towards revitalizing the mine, marked by political challenges and steadfast determination.
He underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to improving the livelihoods of the Zambian people through transformative ventures like the Luanshya Copper Mines revival.
The ceremony also paid tribute to the visionary leadership of Zambia’s Founding President, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, and his colleagues, who laid the groundwork for the enduring partnership between Zambia and China.
As the dewatering process marks the beginning of Shaft 28’s resurgence, hopes run high for Luanshya to reclaim its status as a premier mining community.
President Hichilema concluded with a rallying cry of “Luanshya oooyeee!”, encapsulating the spirit of optimism and determination permeating the mining town.
The commencement of the Luanshya Copper Mines revival represents not only a triumph of perseverance but also a testament to the power of collaboration between nations in pursuit of economic progress and prosperity.
