Zambia Electricity Supply Cooperation To Set Up 800 Megawatts Solar Plants

Zambia Electricity Supply Cooperation Limited is working on setting up solar plants across the country to produce 800 megawatts of electricity.

ZESCO National Spokesperson HENRY KAPATA states that the company’s plan to set up solar plants across the country is in alignment with the directive from President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA to explore alternative sources of energy.

He says ZESCO Limited plans to construct a 250 megawatts solar plant on their own, and will also partner with another company to construct another 250 megawatts.”

According to Mr. KAPATA, ZESCO Limited has identified areas in Southern, Luapula, and Western Provinces as ideal locations for solar projects, particularly in drought-prone regions.

Mr. KAPATA announced that the company is considering the construction of 500 megawatts of wind energy in provinces that are suitable for the project.”

He also revealed that two projects are in the works to address the challenges of hydro power generation in the country.

According to Mr. KAPATA, a 1200 megawatts project on the Luapula river is being explored in collaboration with the Democratic Republic of Congo, and a 2400 megawatts hydro power station with Zimbabwe will be constructed in Southern Province.
