Zambia Govt Urges Mining Firms to Comply with New Environmental Regulations
Zambia’s commitment to a greener future and environmental protection is now more apparent than ever, as the government urges mining companies to acquaint themselves with the forthcoming Environmental Protection Act. This proactive step is aimed at preventing any potential conflicts with the law once the act is implemented.
Addressing the importance of the amended act, Collins Nzovu, the Minister of Green Economy and Environment, emphasized that the revised legislation holds significant repercussions for those found disregarding its provisions.
Nzovu highlighted that while the government is enthusiastic about welcoming investments into the country, it is equally crucial for investors to uphold and respect the laws of the nation.
During his recent visit to the Mumbwa District, Minister Nzovu paid an inspection visit to Consolidated Gold Mining and Exploration Limited.
During this inspection, it was noted that workers were operating without adequate personal protective equipment. The general manager of the company, Muhamed Abul Ali, expressed remorse to the minister and assured that all raised concerns would be promptly addressed.
Another mining enterprise under the minister’s scrutiny was Work Man Exploration and Mining Limited. Expressing his concern, Nzovu questioned why the company had not yet secured proper documentation for its mining operations.
To ensure adherence to the legal framework, the minister advised Albert Chitona, the Managing Director of the company, to initiate the application process for the necessary permits without delay.
Minister Nzovu has assigned both companies the responsibility of rectifying the issues flagged during his inspection. He has emphasized the importance of compliance and has committed to revisiting the companies to ensure that their operations align with the newly established regulations.
This proactive stance by the Zambian government reflects its dedication to environmental preservation and sustainable economic growth within the mining sector.
