Zambia Pushes Local Jobs, Procurement and Mining Opportunities in North-Western Province

Government Steps Up Support for Local Businesses and Small-Scale Miners in North-Western Zambia

The Zambian Government is seeking to increase local participation in mining activities in North-Western Province by expanding opportunities for local employment, procurement and small-scale mining.

Authorities have directed Kalengwa Mine to prioritise the employment of local people and increase the procurement of goods and services from Zambian suppliers.

The Government is also encouraging greater participation of local people in mining activities at Kikonge Mine, including through increased access to mining licences.

Small-scale miners are set to receive additional support, including equipment to improve their production capacity.

The Government also plans to purchase gold produced by artisanal and small-scale miners, providing them with a formal market for their output.

Measures are also being considered to ensure that local miners and communities operating around mining areas can conduct their activities without unnecessary interference.

Infrastructure development is expected to further support mining and economic activity in the province.

Planned road improvements include the M8 and Kalengwa roads, which are important routes for the movement of people, minerals, equipment and supplies.

The measures are aimed at increasing the economic benefits of mining for local communities and businesses while strengthening the participation of Zambian companies and small-scale miners in the country’s mineral value chain.
