Zambia Seeks Collaboration with India to Tackle Climate Change
The Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Hon. Eng. Collins Nzovu MP, has expressed Zambia’s keen interest in learning from India’s experiences and collaborating on climate change mitigation efforts.
In a meeting with India’s High Commissioner to Zambia, His Excellency Mr. Ashok Kumar, Minister Nzovu highlighted the significant contributions of Zambia’s vibrant Indian community to the country’s economy, holding key positions across various sectors.
He also noted India’s substantial investments in Zambia, particularly in the mining sector, which exceed US$5 billion, with notable ventures such as Vedanta Resources in Konkola Copper Mines and Bharti Airtel’s Airtel Zambia.
Minister Nzovu emphasized the mutual desire of both countries to bolster bilateral trade, aiming for a US$1 billion increase.
He underscored Zambia’s consistent support for India on international issues, reciprocated by India’s assistance in Zambia’s development, including lines of credit and technical cooperation in sectors like power and defense.
Highlighting India’s efforts in combating climate change, Minister Nzovu praised the country’s domestic policies promoting clean energy, aligning with its commitments under the Paris Agreement.
He acknowledged the challenges India faces, including the need to develop a clear coal phase-out strategy and address regional disparities.
Minister Nzovu commended India’s multifaceted approach to climate action, leveraging both domestic and international finance, engaging the private sector, and advocating for climate finance at global fora.
In response, India’s High Commissioner to Zambia, His Excellency Mr. Ashok Kumar, expressed India’s readiness to support Zambia with water harvesting technology and other forms of bilateral assistance.
