Zambia Sees Growth in Urban Electricity Access, Report Shows
Zambia has recorded a significant increase in urban electricity access, according to the 2023 National Energy Access Baseline Survey report.
The report reveals that, out of more than 1.5 million households in the country, over 80% now have access to electricity, a notable rise from the 64% recorded in previous surveys.
Peter Mumba, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, attributed this progress to the ministry’s ongoing initiatives in collaboration with various stakeholders.
He highlighted that these efforts have played a crucial role in expanding electricity access across urban areas.
However, Mr. Mumba emphasized that while the increased access is a positive development, it also underscores the need to reduce Zambia’s reliance on hydropower, urging the exploration of alternative energy sources.
He made these remarks during the launch of the National Energy Access Baseline Survey Report in Lusaka. The survey was conducted by the Ministry of Energy in partnership with the Rural Electrification Authority (REA) and the Zambia Statistics Agency.
Sheila Mudenda, Acting Statistician at the Zambia Statistics Agency, stated that the findings of the report provide valuable data to inform policy-making, guide investment decisions, and shape national development strategies.
