Zambia’s Energy Minister Calls for Strong Leadership from New Energy Regulation Board
Zambia’s Minister of Energy has urged the newly appointed Energy Regulation Board (ERB) to provide firm, professional, and prudent leadership in the country’s energy sector, emphasizing its crucial role as a pillar of national economic stability and development.
Speaking at the Board’s induction meeting held at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Lusaka, the Minister reminded members that their decisions impact every household and business in Zambia.
“The energy sector affects every citizen. You must act with prudence and ensure your decisions serve the people,” he stressed.
He challenged the Board, chaired by respected lawyer and businessman Mr. James Banda, to promptly tackle persistent challenges such as load-shedding, which continues to hinder productivity and livelihoods across the country.
Highlighting recent policy successes like the open access initiative—which helped reduce fuel prices—the Minister urged the Board to build on such achievements for wider public benefit.
While reaffirming the Government’s full support, the Minister called on the ERB to maintain regulatory independence, enforce policies fairly, and uphold transparency.
He also emphasized the importance of strong collaboration between the Board and ERB management, robust oversight, and effective accountability systems.
Comprising a blend of seasoned professionals and technical experts, the newly inducted Board is expected to lead reforms and drive sustainable growth in Zambia’s evolving energy sector.
