ZCCM-IH Signs Landmark ESG Partnership with Swedish Industry Council
ZCCM-IH and Swedish Industry Council Launch Strategic ESG Partnership to Advance Responsible Mining in Zambia
ZCCM Investments Holdings Plc (ZCCM-IH) has launched a major Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) partnership with the International Council of Swedish Industry (NIR), supported by the Embassy of Sweden in Lusaka.
The agreement was formalised during a signing ceremony held at the ZCCM-IH Head Office, marking a significant milestone in strengthening responsible mining and sustainable value creation across the company’s investment portfolio.
A Strategic Step for Responsible Mining
Sweden’s Ambassador to Zambia, Johan Hallenborg, underscored the pivotal role of mining in the national economy and highlighted ZCCM-IH’s responsibility as a key public-sector player.
He stressed that the mining industry faces considerable ESG risks—including environmental impact, labour rights, community safety and transparency—making strategic action essential.
He noted that the partnership will help address these risks while enhancing business competitiveness and investment potential.
NIR Commends ZCCM-IH’s ESG Leadership
Representing NIR, Laureen McIntosh, Head of Compliance, praised ZCCM-IH for its proactive approach to integrating ESG principles. She said NIR’s engagements with several ZCCM-IH subsidiaries demonstrated the company’s strong and consistent commitment to its ESG objectives, backed by both short- and long-term action plans.
ZCCM-IH Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainability
ZCCM-IH CEO, Kakenenwa Muyangwa, described the partnership as “a declaration of shared ambition” and a reaffirmation of the company’s pledge to drive sustainable growth.
He acknowledged the complex challenges facing the mining sector—such as climate change, social inclusion and governance—and emphasised the importance of global partnerships and expert collaboration in addressing them.
Muyangwa added that ZCCM-IH remains committed to ensuring Zambia’s mineral resources deliver lasting and inclusive value.
Key Objectives of the Partnership
The newly launched ESG collaboration aims to strengthen:
ESG governance and reporting frameworks
Environmental management and climate resilience
Community safety, social inclusion and local development
Transparency, accountability and investor confidence
As Zambia expands its critical minerals sector and strengthens its role in the global energy transition, ZCCM-IH affirms that mining must remain not only profitable, but also ethical, inclusive and transformative.
