Zimbabwe Set to Add 1,365MW of New Power Capacity by Year-End

Zimbabwe Targets 1,365MW Power Capacity Expansion by December to Strengthen Energy Supply

Zimbabwe is expected to add 1,365MW of new electricity generation capacity by December as the government intensifies efforts to strengthen energy security and address persistent power shortages.

The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) says 635MW of generation projects are currently under construction, while an additional 730MW is planned, subject to financing.

The combined capacity is expected to significantly improve the country’s electricity supply and support growing demand from industry and households.

The expansion forms part of Zimbabwe’s broader strategy to reduce reliance on electricity imports, improve grid reliability, and provide a stable power supply for key economic sectors, including mining, manufacturing and agriculture.

The new capacity will come from a combination of thermal power stations, renewable energy projects and independent power producer (IPP) developments.

Increased private sector participation is expected to play a key role in accelerating investment and expanding the country’s power generation base.

Authorities believe the projects will help reduce load shedding, improve industrial productivity and enhance the competitiveness of Zimbabwe’s economy.

A more reliable electricity supply is also expected to attract new investment and support long-term economic growth.

Once the planned projects are completed, Zimbabwe will be better positioned to meet rising domestic electricity demand while strengthening its role in the Southern African Power Pool through improved regional power trade.
