Zimbabwe’s President Mnangagwa Extends Condolences to Iran Over President Raisi’s Death
President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe has extended his heartfelt condolences to the people of Iran following the tragic death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash in northwestern Iran.
The crash also claimed the lives of the governor of East Azerbaijan province and other senior officials, including Iran’s Foreign Minister.
In a statement reported by The Herald, President Mnangagwa reaffirmed Zimbabwe’s commitment to collaborating with Iran in advancing mutual socio-economic development goals despite existing sanctions.
He expressed optimism for continued cooperation in memory of President Raisi’s legacy, recalling Raisi’s historic state visit to Zimbabwe in July 2023, which strengthened the bilateral relationship.
“I have learned with deep sorrow of the untimely demise of the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, His Excellency Dr. Ebrahim Seyyed Raisi, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Dr. Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, as well as other senior government officials on May 19, 2024,” President Mnangagwa stated.
“This tragedy has befallen the Islamic Republic of Iran at a time when our countries were working towards enhancing our shared goal of promoting socio-economic development through broadening and deepening cooperation in the face of sanctions against both nations.”
President Mnangagwa noted that the tragedy was a significant loss not only for Iran but also for Zimbabwe. “The passing of President Raisi is a heavy blow to the people and government of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the people and government of the Republic of Zimbabwe,” he said.
“The government of the Republic of Zimbabwe stands strong in solidarity with the Islamic Republic of Iran, and we offer our support and sympathy at this very difficult time,” he added.
