Yeo and GEI Power Partner to Develop Solar Power Plant in Zambia
Yeo, a Turkey-based company, has partnered with local firm GEI Power to construct a 60 MW photovoltaic solar power plant in Zambia’s Choma district. The project will also include a 20 MWh battery storage system.
During the construction phase, the project will employ 150 local workers, with an additional 50 seasonal jobs created once the plant is operational.
This initiative demonstrates a strong commitment to local engagement and corporate social responsibility (CSR), contributing to the economic development of the Choma district.
The solar power plant aims to address Zambia’s need for alternative energy sources and mitigate the impact of drought on hydroelectricity production.
GEI’s Managing Director, Ignatius Anayawa, stated that the new infrastructure will supply electricity to at least 65,000 Zambian households, meeting immediate energy demands and supporting future growth.
Currently, only 30% of Zambia’s population has access to electricity, with rural areas at just 5%. The country’s energy generation is heavily reliant on hydropower, which accounts for nearly 90% of its total installed capacity. However, recurring droughts have hindered the full operation of hydroelectric plants.
In response, Zambia has increasingly embraced solar energy, with several power stations inaugurated in the Copperbelt, its main mining region near the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) border.
This new solar project in Choma further strengthens Zambia’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development.
