ZESCO Accelerates Solar Expansion with 500 MW Boost to the National Grid
ZESCO has announced plans to add approximately 500 megawatts (MW) of solar-generated electricity to Zambia’s national grid to help address the country’s energy deficit.
Of this target, 134 MW are expected to come online within the next three months. ZESCO Managing Director Justin Longo explained that the move is necessary to mitigate the impact of reduced hydroelectric generation caused by drought conditions.
Mr. Longo outlined several key projects: Chisamba will contribute 100 MW, Mansa 25 MW, Kasupe 7.5 MW, and Shangombo 2 MW. In addition, the micro-generator scheme and the Presidential Solar Initiative are expected to add 270 MW and 62 MW, respectively.
He also highlighted other efforts such as net metering, smart grids, and mini-grids aimed at enhancing energy management and expanding access to electricity.
Mr. Longo’s remarks were delivered on his behalf by ZESCO Divisional Manager Given Monde during the Third National Students and Youth Parliament held in Lusaka.
He emphasized that Zambia’s energy future will largely be shaped by creative, innovative, and skilled youth, which is why ZESCO is supporting initiatives like the 2025 Third National Students and Youth Parliament.
Meanwhile, National Council of Students Union (NACOSU) Chairperson Michelo Chizombe said the Youth Parliament, which brought together young leaders from all ten provinces, focused on fostering dialogue and finding solutions to pressing national issues, including energy and governance.
Mr. Chizombe stressed the importance of young people actively developing their leadership skills and knowledge in preparation for the future.
