Soventix Joins Solar-Storage Project to Power DRC’s Kamoa-Kakula Copper Mine
German solar energy company Soventix GmbH will play a key role in the development of a large-scale solar and battery storage project to power the Kamoa-Kakula copper complex in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The company announced its participation on April 30, 2025.
Soventix will be responsible for planning, project management, and supplying key components.
The project is being led by CrossBoundary Energy, a developer specializing in renewable energy solutions for commercial and industrial clients, which will operate the facility.
Earlier in April, Kamoa Copper—the owner of the Kamoa-Kakula complex—and CrossBoundary Energy signed a power purchase agreement to advance the initiative.
The project will include the construction of a 222 MWp solar power plant, paired with a 526 MWh battery storage system.
The combined system is expected to deliver a consistent 30 MW of power to the mine, helping ensure a clean and reliable energy supply.
Kamoa-Kakula is one of Africa’s largest and most advanced copper projects. Once its three development phases and smelter are fully operational in 2026, the complex is projected to require approximately 240 MW of power.
This solar-storage project is part of a broader effort to diversify and stabilize the mine’s energy mix with renewable sources.
Soventix, already active in Nigeria, Kenya, and Rwanda, is expanding its footprint in Africa through this Congolese venture.
CrossBoundary Energy, supported by Norway’s development finance institution Norfund, is promoting renewable solutions tailored to the demands of heavy industry across the continent.
