Sandvik Unveils AutoMine Surface Drilling Training Simulator to Advance Operator Skills
Sandvik Launches AutoMine Surface Drilling Simulator to Boost Mining Efficiency and Safety
Sandvik Mining has introduced its AutoMine Surface Drilling Training Simulator, a cutting-edge tool designed to improve operator skills, accelerate learning, and increase the efficiency of automated drilling operations.
The simulator is compatible with all i-series surface drill rigs and provides a realistic, safe, and cost-effective training environment for modern mining operations. It enables trainees to operate up to three rigs of the same type simultaneously, with a focus on:
Path planning
Autonomous production cycle management
Real-time monitoring of drilling progress
It features realistic camera views that replicate those used in AutoMine operations, along with dedicated virtual modules for practicing on the AutoMine safety system.
Housed in a compact, portable transport case, the simulator is easy to relocate and set up, supporting rapid deployment across global mining operations.
Equipped with authentic rig pedals and controls, it delivers a hands-on experience that mirrors real-world conditions.
Operating as a stand-alone unit, it requires no external network connections and uses components from Sandvik’s existing training platforms.
By shifting much of the training process to a virtual environment, the simulator also supports sustainability efforts by:
Reducing fuel consumption
Minimizing equipment wear
Lowering carbon emissions
Comprehensive Training Program
The simulator is compatible with both AutoMine Universal Operator Stations and rig-specific stations. Its structured program covers all aspects of the AutoMine system, including operational controls, diagnostics, and troubleshooting, ensuring well-rounded skill development for operators and technicians.
Industry Perspective
Anu Pyysalo, Head of Learning Solutions Automation at Sandvik Mining, explained the simulator’s value:
“The AutoMine Surface Drilling Training Simulator bridges the gap from classroom learning to operational readiness by giving operators an immersive, hands-on environment to practice, make mistakes, and refine their skills before working in a live mine.
This approach accelerates learning, builds confidence, and ensures that operators are fully prepared to manage complex automated systems safely and effectively.”
The launch of the simulator follows Sandvik’s May release of AutoMine Surface Fleet, a system that allows centralized management of more than 15 Sandvik i-series surface drill rigs from any connected location.
