Ivanhoe Mines’ Platreef Mine Hits First Production

Ivanhoe Mines’ Platreef Mine Launches Production, Poised to Become a Leading Platinum-Group Metals Producer

Ivanhoe Mines has officially opened the Platreef Mine in Limpopo Province, South Africa, achieving its first production of platinum, palladium, rhodium, gold, nickel, and copper concentrate.

The development of the Platreef Mine continues to advance rapidly as global demand for precious and base metals reaches new highs.

Ivanhoe Mines’ Executive Co-Chair Robert Friedland emphasized the significance of the project, describing the Platreef orebody as “once-in-a-generation” due to its scale, thickness, and mechanization potential.

Unlike typical South African precious metals mines, Platreef’s flat-lying orebody enables safe, large-scale mechanized mining, reducing costs and improving operational efficiency.

Friedland noted that the current metal market dynamics and rising prices have prompted discussions to accelerate the timeline for the mine’s third phase of expansion.

The Phase 1 concentrator has begun ramping up production following the first concentrate output. Initial feed is drawn from lower-grade development ore, with production ore set to gradually replace development material as the newly constructed Shaft #3 becomes operational.

The completion of Shaft #3 will significantly increase hoisting capacity, allowing simultaneous handling of ore and waste and supporting both current operations and future expansion phases.

Phase 2 development is already underway, including the construction of a new concentrator and underground infrastructure, with completion expected within the next few years.

Ivanhoe Mines has secured project financing and appointed experienced contractors to ensure the project progresses efficiently. Phase 2 will significantly boost production capacity, while Phase 3 is planned to further expand operations to become one of the world’s largest primary platinum-group metals producers.

The Platreef orebody, known as Flatreef, is polymetallic and high-grade, containing a balanced mix of platinum and palladium alongside substantial quantities of rhodium, gold, nickel, and copper.

Its thick, flat-lying structure allows for modern mechanized mining and provides considerable potential for further resource expansion.

The mine’s resource base supports multi-generational production and positions Platreef as one of the lowest-cost producers of platinum-group metals globally.

Rising global metal prices have substantially increased the project’s valuation, highlighting the financial strength and strategic importance of the Platreef Mine.

With its diversified mineral output and low production costs, Platreef is poised to play a central role in meeting global demand for strategic metals, supporting both industrial growth and sustainable development.
