Kagem Mining Celebrates Four-Year Lost Time Injury-Free Safety Milestone

Kagem Mining Achieves Four Years Without Lost Time Injury, Earns Recognition from Minerals Regulation Commission

Kagem Mining Limited has been formally recognised by the Minerals Regulation Commission for achieving four consecutive years without a Lost Time Injury (LTI) a significant milestone in Zambia’s mining sector.

The recognition marks a historic first for Kagem and underscores the company’s sustained commitment to workplace health and safety in a high-risk industry.

Regulatory Commendation

Director of Mine Inspections and Audits at the Minerals Regulation Commission, Engineer Elite L. Mhone, commended the company for its exemplary safety performance.

“Four years without a Lost Time Injury is not an easy achievement. It requires deliberate and consistent planning, regular review and disciplined follow-through,” he said.

He noted that as Zambia seeks to accelerate economic development and strengthen its global competitiveness, productivity in mining will be essential but not at the expense of worker safety.

“It is encouraging to see organisations such as Kagem demonstrating that productivity and robust health and safety standards can go hand in hand,” he added.

Leadership Perspective

Kagem Board Chair Dr Sixtus Mulenga, who received the award on behalf of the company, emphasised the deeper significance of the milestone.

“This recognition is meaningful not simply as an accolade, but because it represents the safety of our employees individuals who return safely to their families after every shift and whose productivity contributes to Zambia’s economic well-being,” he said.

Dr Mulenga highlighted that mining is inherently complex and high-risk, making the achievement particularly noteworthy. He attributed the milestone to a strong “people-first” culture embedded throughout the organisation.

“As we celebrate this four-year milestone, we remain mindful that mining is a challenging industry. Our progress is driven by a culture of care, continuous improvement and an unwavering pursuit of excellence in safety,” he said.

Zero-Harm Culture and Continuous Training

Kagem has adopted a comprehensive zero-harm strategy, supported by ongoing training programmes and stringent safety protocols across its operations.

The company has consistently invested in strengthening health and safety systems to ensure operational efficiency does not compromise employee well-being.

In May 2025, Kagem was also recognised by the Mines Safety Department under the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development for surpassing 10 million LTI-free hours.

The company has previously received multiple safety accolades, including “Best Mine in Safety” from the Zambia Chamber of Mines in 2024 and recognition from the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development in both 2024 and 2025.

Kagem’s Head of Health, Safety, Environment and Quality, Benedict Bukoka, described the achievement as the result of collective commitment.

“This milestone reflects the shared responsibility of every employee in upholding our zero-harm culture. To us, no gemstone is more precious than the people who mine them,” he said.

International Certification Standards

In addition to its safety performance, Kagem holds several internationally recognised management certifications, including:

  • ISO 14001:2015 – Environmental Management Systems
  • ISO 45001:2018 – Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems
  • ISO 9001:2015 – Quality Management Systems
  • ISO 27001:2022 – Information Security Management Systems

The four-year LTI-free achievement further strengthens Kagem’s reputation as a responsible operator within Zambia’s mining sector, demonstrating that high safety standards and operational performance can be successfully aligned.
