Zambia’s Mining Sector Attracts Fresh Investor Interest as Economic Recovery Gains Momentum

Zambia Mining Investment Rises as Copper Demand and Economic Reforms Boost Investor Confidence

Investor interest in Zambia’s mining sector is increasing as the country’s economic reforms and debt restructuring efforts improve confidence in its long-term growth prospects.

Lowani Chibesakunda, Citi’s Chief Executive Officer and Banking Head for Zambia, said the financial services group has seen growing interest from investors in key sectors including mining, energy and agriculture.

The renewed attention comes as Zambia continues its economic recovery following the completion of its sovereign debt restructuring process and improvements in its credit outlook.

Zambia’s mining sector remains central to this recovery. The country holds significant copper resources and is positioned to benefit from rising global demand for the metal, driven by renewable energy, electric vehicles and expanding electricity infrastructure.

“Copper remains a major part of Zambia’s economic story, particularly as demand continues to grow from energy transition industries,” Chibesakunda said.

The country’s copper industry has attracted interest from both traditional mining investors and new entrants seeking exposure to critical minerals.

Zambia produced a record 890,000 tonnes of copper in 2025, reinforcing its position as one of Africa’s leading copper producers.

Beyond mining, Chibesakunda said investor interest is also expanding into sectors such as technology, pharmaceuticals and other emerging industries, including interest from companies based in the Middle East.

Zambia’s economic outlook has improved following progress on debt restructuring and fiscal reforms.

The country is targeting stronger economic growth while working to reduce fiscal pressures and attract further private-sector investment.

With copper demand expected to remain strong globally, Zambia’s mining sector is likely to remain a key driver of investment, exports and economic development.
