Tests in Canada confirm the quality of Manono lithium for the production of electric batteries | DRC

  • The results of independent tests carried out in Canada give AVZ Minerals confidence to continue the development of the project and negotiate the sale of the product upstream.

In DRC, the Manono project can deliver primary lithium sulphate that meets the specifications required for the manufacture of electric batteries. This is the assurance received by the mining company AVZ Minerals which requested tests in Canada to confirm the quality of the product.

Independent metallurgical test work has confirmed Manono’s Primary Lithium Sulphate is suitable for battery production feedstock.

Thanks to the various treatment processes envisaged by AVZ, the Kingston Process Metallurgy laboratory called upon for the operation succeeded in purifying the spodumene concentrate (SC6) extracted in the DRC. The result is a primary lithium sulfate containing over 80% pure lithium, which is the ideal raw material for the production of lithium-ion batteries.

“  It is encouraging to have independent confirmation of the process we are proposing for the lithium sulfate plant as well as the assurance that our product is suitable for battery plants  ,” said Nigel Ferguson, CEO of the company.

While several buyers are already interested in the Manono project in order to secure a future lithium supply, this news further strengthens AVZ’s position. The company can in fact negotiate the offtake agreements at best, but also arouse the interest of investors for rapid financing of mine development.

According to the feasibility study published in April 2020, the investment required for the project amounts to $ 545.5 million, with an annual production of 700,000 tonnes of spodumene concentrate expected.
