EU Launches Trade and Digital Skills Projects to Strengthen the Lobito Corridor
European Union Invests €11 Million in Lobito Corridor Projects to Boost Trade, Logistics, and Youth Employment in the DRC
The European Union has launched two strategic development projects along the Lobito Corridor on Monday, March 23, 2026, in Kolwezi, Lualaba Province.
The first project, valued at €6 million, focuses on facilitating trade by simplifying customs and regulatory procedures, improving cross-border efficiency, and reducing administrative bottlenecks.
The second project, funded with €5 million, aims to strengthen digital skills among young people living along the corridor, equipping them with competencies that can lead to employment opportunities in logistics, trade, and related industries.
Together, these initiatives are designed to modernize and revitalize the Lobito Corridor by accelerating the digitization of trade processes, enhancing logistics performance, and strengthening the competitiveness of Congolese mineral exports particularly copper and cobalt toward international markets via the Angolan port of Lobito.
The projects form part of the European Union’s broader support for the corridor, a strategic transport route linking the mineral-rich Lualaba region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the Atlantic coast through Angola.
Ongoing investments in rail rehabilitation, customs modernization, and trade facilitation are expected to optimize mineral transport flows and stimulate regional economic growth.
These initiatives are being implemented with technical support from TradeMark Africa under the framework of the Global Gateway strategy.
They also reflect strengthened cooperation between the Congolese government, development partners, and the private sector to improve trade efficiency and expand employment opportunities.
By enhancing logistics capacity and streamlining supply chains for critical minerals, these projects further reinforce the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s position as a key player in regional and global mineral markets, while supporting sustainable economic development across the corridor.
