TFM Transforms Fungurume: 15 Years of Sustainable Community Development

TFM’s CSR Programs Drive Health, Education, and Infrastructure Growth in Fungurume

Since breaking ground on its mine in 2006, Tenke Fungurume Mining (TFM) has actively implemented a comprehensive corporate social responsibility (CSR) program.

From the outset, the company prioritized key social areas and designed recovery programs to benefit the surrounding communities.

Health and education were the primary focus, followed by initiatives in agriculture and infrastructure.

Complementary programs included training in savings and credit management, as well as the creation of income-generating activities for local residents.

These programs were informed by baseline surveys conducted within the community, ensuring that initiatives were aligned with local needs.

Their adoption was collaborative, with community members actively participating in program design.

For nearly 15 years, TFM has worked hand in hand with the community to implement sustainable development projects.

Since 2021, these efforts have been carried out according to established specifications, ensuring consistency and long-term impact.

The transformation of the concession area is striking. The municipality of Fungurume, for instance, has evolved from a small rural town into a thriving municipality with durable infrastructure rivaling other cities in the region.

Roads, public facilities, and utilities have all improved significantly, reflecting TFM’s commitment to lasting community development.

This development has been a major factor in the region’s population growth. From an estimated 40,000 residents at the time of the baseline study in 2008, Fungurume’s population has now grown to over 300,000.

The municipality is vibrant, with a diversified local economy and promising prospects for continued growth and prosperity.

TFM’s CSR programs demonstrate how mining companies can foster sustainable development by combining strategic planning with community engagement, creating lasting benefits for both the company and the populations it serves.
