Barrick Provides Context on Media Report Regarding Security at North Mara
On September 21, 2023, The Globe and Mail published an article, based on documents referenced in UK Court Proceedings, which discusses activities alleged to have occurred at the North Mara Mine in Tanzania before 2017 when Acacia Mining Plc was an independent entity.
Barrick acquired full ownership of Acacia Mining Plc in 2019 and it now holds an indirect majority stake in the North Mara Mine with the establishment of Twiga Minerals in 2019 — a joint venture between Barrick and the Government of Tanzania.
Since then, Barrick has significantly reinvented the mines in Tanzania as well as their operations which together now produce gold as a Tier One complex.
We recognized and have addressed the legacy issues, rebuilt trust and restored the social license to operate as an integral member of the community.
Security is critically important to protecting the lives of employees at the North Mara Mine and our assets. Since 2019, we have continued to significantly develop the mine’s security management program which include an updated Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in place with the Tanzanian Police Force (TPF) aligned with the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights.
As we have said in the past, Barrick does not, and cannot, control, direct or supervise the TPF which operates independently under their own chain of command and is responsible for protecting the interests of critical national and private sector infrastructure in local communities.
