Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Urges Responsible Mining at African Mining Indaba
On Monday, January 3, Judith Suminwa, the head of the Congolese government, participated in the opening of the 31st edition of the Investing in African Mining Indaba, held virtually from Cape Town, South Africa.
This year’s forum, with the theme “Preparing the Future of the Mining Industry Today,” brought together industry leaders and stakeholders from across the globe.
In her address, Prime Minister Suminwa emphasized the importance of responsible mining, stating, “Mining must be a lever for sustainable development, not a burden for future generations.” She urged African leaders to unite in promoting mining as a tool for socio-economic growth across the continent.
“Making the mining sector a catalyst for socio-economic development throughout Africa, through solid partnerships, is the challenge of the Congolese government. y
We call on all African governments, the private sector, civil society organizations, and local communities to work together constructively, ensuring responsible exploitation that benefits our populations and economies.”
The event, which runs from February 3 to 6, 2025, will focus on sustainable mining practices and the need for investment in infrastructure and technology to drive sector growth.
A key topic of discussion will be the ongoing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and its impact on the mining industry.
Mining Indaba 2025 will also serve as a platform to explore the role of African mining in the global transition to renewable energy.
For reference, the 2024 Mining Indaba was held under the theme “Embracing the Power of Positive Disruption: A Promising New Future for Mining in Africa.”
