US Sanctions Target Mineral Trafficking Networks Linked to Eastern DRC Conflict
US Imposes Sanctions on Individuals and Entities Over Alleged Conflict Mineral Smuggling in Eastern DRC
The United States has imposed a new round of sanctions targeting individuals and entities accused of involvement in the illicit trade of minerals originating from the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), according to statements from the U.S. State Department and Treasury Department.
The measures focus on networks alleged to be linked to the smuggling of conflict minerals through regional supply chains.
Among those sanctioned are individuals and entities accused of facilitating the movement of gold and other minerals out of eastern DRC through neighbouring countries.
According to the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs, illicit mineral trade in the region has contributed to the financing of armed groups and ongoing instability in eastern DRC.
The office stated that efforts to disrupt these networks are intended to reduce financial flows that support conflict and to promote more transparent mineral supply chains in the Great Lakes region.
The Treasury Department confirmed that the sanctions target multiple individuals and organisations alleged to be connected to mineral smuggling networks operating between eastern DRC and Rwanda.
The measures are part of broader efforts to limit the financial resources available to armed groups operating in the region.
A State Department spokesperson said the actions support ongoing diplomatic initiatives aimed at improving security and stability in eastern DRC.
The spokesperson added that the objective is to ensure that the country’s mineral resources contribute to economic development rather than conflict.
Officials indicated that the sanctions are aligned with broader international efforts to strengthen traceability in critical mineral supply chains and reduce illicit trade in resource-rich conflict zones.
The eastern DRC has long faced insecurity linked to armed groups, with natural resource exploitation often cited as one of several factors contributing to prolonged instability.
The latest sanctions form part of continued U.S. policy actions aimed at addressing the intersection of resource governance and regional security.
