KCM Sets Sights on 300,000-Tonne Copper Milestone as Production Recovers

KCM Copper Production Target: Konkola Mine Aims for 300,000 Tonnes Within Three Years

Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) is targeting annual copper production of 300,000 tonnes within the next three years, as the Zambian mining company accelerates its recovery and expansion programme.

KCM Chief Executive Officer Malcolm Mewett said the company was encouraged by the recent improvement in production, with the mine producing 10,000 metric tonnes of copper in July.

The July output marks a significant step in KCM’s efforts to rebuild production and move towards its longer-term target.

Mewett said production is expected to increase further as the company continues to invest in mine development, processing capacity and operational improvements.

A major driver of the planned growth is the Konkola Deep Mining Project (KDMP), which is expected to unlock deeper, high-grade copper resources and substantially increase KCM’s production capacity.

The company’s expansion will also be important to Zambia’s broader ambition of increasing national copper production to 3 million tonnes annually by 2031.

KCM’s planned increase to 300,000 tonnes would make it one of the significant contributors to that national target.

The production ramp-up is also expected to support employment, local procurement and economic activity across the Copperbelt, while strengthening investor confidence in Zambia’s mining sector.

KCM’s progress will therefore be closely watched over the coming three years as the company works to translate its investment and expansion plans into higher and more consistent copper production.
